Dis-liminal

Dis-liminal is an immersive triptych of paintings that embodies my process of experimentation and collaboration. A turning point for my path as an artist began on a Vermont farm run by two artists, where I learned to center community in my work. Last fall, I returned to paint with the artists and their children over the course of one evening with no plan or expectations for an outcome. Prior to my experience with the family, painting acted as a rigid space where I could take comfort in my own self-made rules. The rules could be broken, but on my terms. The process of painting with the family brought an element of play into making. My thesis paintings act as a new approach; leaning into playfulness through rhythmic paint strokes and vibrant colors. Each painting draws from a special moment in solitude, with family, or around community. Physically, the three paintings are connected in a wooden frame that arranges them in a semi-circle that can be entered by the viewer.
