A Name I Haven’t Chosen Just Yet
A Name I Haven’t Chosen Just Yet is a collage autobiography inspired by the file organization of a traditional archive. Stories about hardship and life experience get told in a way that flattens them, making them either deeply sad or deeply inspirational—I am neither of those things and that’s not how memory actually works. In this two part piece, I am exploring what it means to retell trauma and personality-defining moments in the way I actually recall them, as well as curating a scrapbook collection of mementos that tell the story of my life. I executed this through creating a binder resembling that of one’s “file” whether that be psychological, medical, or criminal and by creating a flat lay large format collage that embodies physical manifestations of formative experiences.
