Presence + Absence

Presence + Absence explores the relationship between the photographer, the subject, and the viewer through experiments in form and process. I photographed a series of portraits as a product of my research on intimacy and the gaze, particularly referencing Susan Sontag's ideas on control and power balances in photography, and Roland Barthes's theories on the subject experience.

“Decisive moments” are often controlled by the photographer. This series of portraits allows each subject to choose their own “decisive moment” by controlling the shutter themselves, creating a collaborative image, straying away from the possibility of being vulnerable without consent. The presentation box houses chromogenic prints of each portrait and ephemera from the image-making process (e.g., literature, documentation from interactions with subjects). The box is nestled within a wooden frame that encourages engagement with the artwork, while also being able to display prints. The series is shown in the box as a means to explore the potential for intimate interaction between the photographer, the work, and the viewer. The piece invites viewers to touch the work, have an individual experience, and forces the artist to give up another traditional element of control.
