Against Efemmera: Solidifying Transfeminine Footprints In An Evererasing Landscape

As I approach my one year anniversary of starting estrogen, I find myself in unprecedented social terrain. Living in a country rampant in bigotry, only fueled by the results of this last election, has forced me to become increasingly existentialist. I’ve never questioned my lifespan, nor my impact, more than now. How do I want to be remembered? How will I make sure I’m not forgotten?

Against Efemmera: Solidifying Transfeminine Footprints in an Evererasing Landscape is my holding place for these questions. Primarily taking form through bookmaking, I’ve become fascinated with a wide array of self documentation techniques. When I think of ephemera, I inherently think of femininity; the objects I’ve collected over the years, whether it be clothing, makeup, jewelry, or even bodily excretions, are intuitive forms of self documentation. My thesis explores how I can preserve them from their inevitable demise.

Through distributing my work in physical forms, rather than the internet, I aim to protect them from censorship, harassment and erasure. This takes a lot of faith, not only in the carefulness of my patrons, but also in forms of media that dance with obsolescence as technology further progresses.
