I Saved This For You

I Saved This For You is my ongoing personal archive of research and development for knitting grids. The archive holds the intention of being preserved for future generations of knitters. It exists as a collection of objects created by the artist which fit into a binder. Preserved in this format, the collection is relatively compact and is therefore able to be stored away safely on a bookshelf, pulled out when necessary and can be added to. It is the way in which the owner interacts with the object that partially dictates what it is. On the outside, it’s just a binder full of papers and photos and knit swatches and zines. In my possession, it becomes a collection of knitting-related ephemera - knit swatches, hand-drawn motifs and charts - that I’ve spent years cultivating the knowledge of and months creating. In the hands of a friend or future child, it becomes an archive of writing and samples and charts which can be used as teaching tools alongside an orally passed down knowledge. I Saved This For You contains the capacity for transformation, for longevity and preservation of techniques that we’re losing to this modern world.
