Tending the Unwritten

"Tending the Unwritten" is an intimate archive of memory, transformation, and self-mythology. My work explores personal history through material-based storytelling, using organic and ephemeral substances—cyanotype prints, natural fibers, mycelium, and bio-composites—to hold the weight of what cannot always be spoken. At its center is a storybook, both a narrative map and a living artifact, binding together a series of handcrafted objects that mark pivotal moments in my life.

Each object is a vessel for remembrance. An eggshell dagger embodies the tension of growing up in an emotionally-unpredictable home. A reliquary of an umbilical cord is paired with an ultrasound print. A necklace spun from my cat’s fur holds the quiet weight of care and responsibility. A stitched heart-journal traces the act of self-love. These are not just artifacts but material manifestations of resilience, fragility, and becoming.

To Tend the Unwritten is to care for what resists being recorded, to hold space for the stories that live in fiber, imprint, and decay. By merging deeply personal experiences with mythic storytelling, my work questions what is preserved, what is allowed to disappear, and what lingers in between.

Thalia Ysatis is a multimedia artist from NYC. Her work explores memory, transformation, and impermanence. Growing up in New York gave her a keen awareness of how spaces and histories evolve and decay over time. Her practice utilizes bio-based materials alongside printmaking. Through these media, she investigates the tension between preservation and ephemerality.
