Kde Domov Můj

How do we preserve spaces that have been lost with time? Kde Domov Můj explores the intersection of memory, space, and preservation through the reconstruction of a childhood refuge—a small house I played in at my grandmother’s, a space preserved in time since the 1970s in Czechoslovakia. Now, as the apartment undergoes renovation, its fixedness dissolves, raising questions about the preservation of history within domestic spaces and the emotional weight of inherited environments.

Inside this structure, a 16mm film plays, layering personal recollections with broader themes of nostalgia and cultural memory. My research delves into Soviet and socialist-era design, examining how objects and interiors function as time capsules, shaping and distorting our sense of belonging. The project considers ostalgie—nostalgia for the Eastern Bloc. Ultimately, this work is less about reconstructing the past than about engaging with the often fragmented ways we attempt to hold onto home.
