Mahogany — A Novel
"Mahogany" is a novel set in postwar London. It combines the genres of literary fiction and coming-of-age, and examines the unique class and gender dynamics of the time period. "Mahogany" follows the intertwining lives of Oscar Astor, an aging aristocrat employed at the British war office, and Agnes Webster, a housewife who comes to meet Oscar by chance. It explores the ways in which Thomas Webster, the child of the two, raised by Agnes alone, navigates the situation he is born into. Agnes must grapple with the transitioning status of women, while Oscar contends with the decline of the British upper class in postwar Britain.
"Mahogany" is the first novel I have worked on, and has been a great learning process. I was able to visit London for the first time in the winter, and immerse myself in the setting of the book. Through drawn outlines, revisions, and rewrites I have learned to better answer questions of structure, pacing, plot, and characterization.
